Green Fling Awarded System Wide Grant

May 10, 2011

(Huntsville, AL--)

As Green Fling 2011 wraps up, the legacy of the event cemented Tuesday night at Huntsville Botanical Gardens.  In the annual awards ceremony, the Huntsville Council of PTAs awarded Goldsmith Schiffman Elementary School a grant that will ensure programs like Green Fling always have a home at GS Elementary School.

The Council presented Goldsmith-Schiffman Elementary PTA a grant for $500.

"It's an honor to receive the funds," said Erin Boles, coordinator of Green Fling.  "We know we are not the only school competing for these dollars.  And the money really makes a difference."  Boles says without the funds, Green Fling would not have happened.  "We tied in every partnership we could think of.  As a result we were able to really lean on the non-profit community to get their 'very best' and come up with meaningful presentations for students.  "The money specifically went to purchase solar cars, which each student received.  We were also able to support exhibits with some of their overhead.  That allowed the kids to make more out of the day."

Students saw first hand eagles, owls and snakes.  They heard from entymologists, ornithologists, hybrid car experts and learned about the future of residential life and high efficiency homes. Green Fling is sponsored by the following business leaders.  We urge you to support these businesses in any way you can.  Sponsors are:  Becky Hall, A Nurturing Moment, Pearson Homes, Jerry Damson Honda of Huntsville, Alfa Insurance agent Stephanie Thorson, One-Hour Heating and Air-Conditioning of Huntsville, Cook's Pest Control and The Land Trust of North Alabama as sponsors.  Goldsmith-Schiffman Elementary School encourages all who benefit from this philanthropy to support these fine businesses in Huntsville.
